Frequently Asked Questions

Is Chelsea a good place to live?
Chelsea needs no introduction, but living here is different from visiting. Behind the King's Road glamour there's a genuine residential community with deep roots. You've got the Chelsea Physic Garden, the Embankment, Saatchi Gallery on your doorstep, and some of London's best independent food shops along Pavilion Road. It's one of the most central residential neighbourhoods in London, with 5 tube stations on the District, Circle, and Piccadilly lines.
What are the best schools in Chelsea?
Compare Chelsea’s state and independent schools using the individual inspection reports linked below. The named inspector and inspection date matter: newer Ofsted report cards and ISI findings are not a shared school ranking. Check the full report and current admissions arrangements for each school.
How much is council tax in Chelsea?
Council tax in Chelsea is set by the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. For 2026/27, a Band D property pays £1,643.44 per year. Given Chelsea's property values, many homes fall into the higher bands (E to H). Billed April to March, payable by monthly direct debit.
What tube stations are near Chelsea?
Chelsea is exceptionally well-connected. Sloane Square and South Kensington sit on the District, Circle, and Piccadilly lines, giving you direct access to Heathrow, the West End, and the City. Gloucester Road and Earl's Court add more options, and Imperial Wharf on the Overground links to Clapham Junction. You can be at Piccadilly Circus in 15 minutes or Canary Wharf in 30.
What are the best restaurants in Chelsea?
Chelsea's dining scene runs from old-school institutions to newer openings that earn their prices. King's Road has the big names, but the better eating is on the side streets and along Pavilion Road's food quarter -- classic brasseries, proper wine bars, and the odd counter spot. We've curated our personal picks on KnowChelsea with honest descriptions you won't find on generic review sites.
Is Chelsea safe?
Chelsea's residential streets are among the safest in central London. The borough-level crime stats for Kensington & Chelsea are inflated by the tourist-heavy areas around South Ken and High Street Kensington, but the residential core of Chelsea itself is very low-crime. Well-lit streets, an active community, and a strong police presence make it one of the safest places to live in zone 1.
Is Chelsea good for families?
Very much so, though in a different way to the suburbs. Chelsea has state and independent school options, safe streets, and is close to Battersea Park (one of London's best for kids) just across the bridge. The Royal Hospital grounds and Chelsea Physic Garden offer green space, and King's Road has plenty of family-friendly restaurants and shops. It's a more urban family experience, but families who live here love the access to culture, museums, and central London on their doorstep.
