Rainy Day Things to Do in Chelsea

This is London, so you'll need this list more often than you'd like. When the rain sets in for the day, the trick isn't to fight it, it's to find somewhere worth being stuck. Chelsea is quietly good at this. Pubs with a real fire and no reason to leave. Cafes where a flat white turns into three and an afternoon. Restaurants for the kind of long lunch that only makes sense when it's grim outside. These places are selected for atmosphere over everything, because a rainy day is only ruined if you spend it somewhere charmless.

Caddi Club Chelsea

The local tip: Pay-and-play is available without membership; check live bay availability before heading to Chelsea Creek.

An indoor golf venue at Chelsea Creek with four TrackMan simulator bays, a bar, food and a comfortable lounge. The bays work for focused practice, lessons or a social round, and pay-and-play bookings mean membership is optional. It feels closer to a neighbourhood clubhouse than a row of practice screens, with early starts and evening sessions most days.

Cafe at The Chelsea Gardener

The local tip: Tucked inside a garden centre. Surprisingly peaceful for King's Road

The Chelsea Gardener Café has indoor and outdoor seating among the garden centre displays on Sydney Street. It serves barista coffee, loose-leaf tea, pastries, cakes, light breakfasts, toasties, soups and salads, including vegan options. You can enter through the store or Chelsea Farmers Market.

John Sandoe Books

The local tip: Ask for a recommendation — they hand-sell better than any algorithm.

One of London's most cherished independent bookshops, founded in 1957 and spread across three floors of 18th-century premises on Blacklands Terrace just off King's Road. Some 30,000 titles, hand-sold by staff with genuine literary nous and no interest in bestseller tables. A bibliophile's idea of heaven.

National Army Museum

The local tip: Free entry and surprisingly engaging. The WW1 trench experience is powerful

A fascinating free museum exploring the story of the British Army from the English Civil War to the present day. The galleries were completely redone in 2017 and are genuinely engaging, interactive displays, powerful personal stories, and thoughtful curation that doesn't shy away from the complexities of military history. The Temptation cafe is good, and the gift shop stocks interesting military history books. An underrated Chelsea gem that deserves more visitors.

PAUL King's Road

The local tip: A chain, but the French one that earns it — take the tarte au citron upstairs and claim a window seat over King's Road.

The French bakery-cafe chain's Chelsea outpost sits on the corner of King's Road and Bywater Street. Say what you will about chains, but PAUL does proper French patisserie, the tarte au citron, the eclairs, and the croque monsieur are all legit. Good strong coffee and a nice spot to watch King's Road go by from the upstairs window seats. Spacious enough that you can usually find a table.

No. 6Royal Court Theatre

Royal Court Theatre

The local tip: The most important new-writing theatre in the country. Upstairs bar is great pre-show

Britain's most important new writing theatre, right on Sloane Square since 1956. This is where Look Back in Anger premiered, where Caryl Churchill and Sarah Kane debuted, and where contemporary British drama continues to be reinvented. The main house and the intimate upstairs studio programme consistently bold, challenging work. Monday performances are often pay-what-you-can. The bar is lively pre and post-show. Essential if you care about theatre.

The local tip: Check the current programme for free displays and ticketed exhibitions before visiting.

One of London's most important contemporary art galleries, housed in the Duke of York's HQ since 2008. The exhibitions rotate regularly and always push boundaries, you'll see everything from established names to emerging artists you've never heard of. The building itself is stunning, a converted military barracks with soaring ceilings and beautiful galleries. Some exhibitions are free, while major shows can require paid tickets; check the current programme. The gift shop is excellent. Essential viewing for anyone interested in contemporary art.

Stamford Bridge

The local tip: Match day atmosphere on the Fulham Road is electric. Stadium tours run daily

Home of Chelsea Football Club since 1905, Stamford Bridge is a 41,000-seat Premier League stadium on the edge of Chelsea. Matchdays transform the area with blue-shirted fans flooding the pubs and streets. Stadium tours run on non-matchday dates and include the dressing rooms, press room, and tunnel. Love football or hate it, the stadium is an inextricable part of Chelsea's identity. The redevelopment plans have been talked about for years but the current ground retains a certain old-school charm.

World's End Bookshop

The local tip: Check the bargain shelves out front before you dive inside.

A secondhand and rare bookshop that's traded for around forty years at the bend of King's Road, marked by its distinctive red awning. Affordable shelves out front, treasures within — a World's End landmark and a reminder of the bohemian Chelsea the chains haven't quite erased.

What makes a good rainy-day spot in Chelsea?

A guide tag narrows the use case, but it does not replace judgement. The place still has to work in real life: the room, the service, the food or offer, and whether I would send someone there for that exact reason.
