Why it's in the guide
The walled garden behind the National Trust's Carlyle's House on Cheyne Row is a delightful hidden green space. The Victorian garden has been maintained as Thomas Carlyle would have known it, fig trees, grape vines, and borders of old-fashioned flowers. It's only accessible with a visit to the house (modest entry fee), but the combination of literary history and garden serenity is uniquely Chelsea. Open spring through autumn.
You can't just wander in — access comes with a house ticket, which is the right order anyway: do the Carlyle tour, then sit under the fig trees.
