Why it's in the guide
One of Chelsea's oldest pubs, pouring on Lawrence Street since 1708 — Turner, Whistler and Dylan Thomas all drank in these low-ceilinged rooms, and when a developer tried to turn it into a private mansion in 2012, locals fought until it reopened as a pub. Butcombe now run the kitchen, which means proper pub food rather than gastropub theatre, and the historic rooms still do the heavy lifting. A few streets from the river, it feels like the village Chelsea used to be.
