Ropers Gardens

Intimate sunken garden with an ancient cherry tree

With KidsDog FriendlyGreat View

Why it's in the guide

Roper’s Garden was created on bomb-damaged land that had formed part of Thomas More’s 1521 marriage gift to William and Margaret Roper. Its cherry tree commemorates Gunji Koizumi, a Japanese judo pioneer who lived nearby. A small but historically rich green space off the Chelsea Embankment.

Find the unfinished Epstein relief — he kept a studio on this spot. The sunken lawn puts the Embankment traffic at a pleasant remove.
